Foreign workers at PMB
Interview with Yohan Besnard, welder.
This interview “Foreign worker at PMB” was conducted with the Human Development Department (DH and not RH 😉). Yohan’s answers have been transcribed verbatim.
Originally from France, what motivated you to come and work in Quebec?
I wanted to come to Quebec to discover a new country, a different culture and work techniques to improve in my field. Add another string to my bow of skills.
What’s the main difference between working in France and in Quebec?
For me, the major difference is the salary. You’re much more valued in Quebec than in France. The atmosphere is much more pleasant here, and the good thing is that you have the opportunity to express yourself and be heard.
You worked at PMB from 2018 to 2019. You went back to France and now you’re back in Saint-Henri. Why did you come back to work for PMB?
I came back for the people, the atmosphere and the aluminum work. I also promised Steve I’d contact him again if I came back.
A more personal question: how did your integration as a “foreign worker” go at PMB?
It went really well. The team did everything to make me feel at ease and didn’t leave me out.
What do you like best about being a welder?
The fact of starting with a piece of metal and working it into a more or less complex piece. The satisfaction I get every time I take on a new challenge.
At first glance, what did the “liberated enterprise” model inspire you to do?
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I was told that there was no “hierarchy” and that everyone had to manage themselves.
If you had any advice for people who are reluctant to apply for a job or who are wary of PMB’s liberated model, what would you tell them?
I’ve worked for quite a few companies in my career as a welder, and this is by far the one I most enjoy coming to work for. The free enterprise really teaches us to take responsibility and to listen, because others listen to us. We learn to manage ourselves and to give our opinion. There’s less pressure in the department and everyone has a smile on their face.
